Transitioning Back to School

TRANSITIONING BACK TO SCHOOL
Back-to-school season is a time of excitement, new opportunities, and fresh beginnings. For many children, it means meeting a new teacher,
making new friends, and discovering new interests. For children with disabilities or special needs, however, the transition back to school can
also bring uncertainty, changes in routine, and new challenges. Preparing for a successful school year often begins long before the first
day of class. Establishing consistent routines, visiting the school, talking about what to expect, and practicing daily skills can help children feel
more comfortable and confident as they return to the classroom.

Parents/Caregivers can help make the transition smoother by:

  • Start adjusting your schedule now to include school routine including
laying out clothing, going to bed on time, and waking up earlier.
  • Use a Calander with a visual for when school starts
  • Plan sensory/regulation tools prior to school starting
  • Organizing school supplies and backpacks ahead of time.
  • Talking positively about the upcoming school year.
  • Drive by the school and tour the school if possible
  • Maintaining open communication with teachers and school staff
  • Add in time for sensory/movement breaks before and after school

Please reach out to your therapist at Family Achievement Center if you have concerns about the upcoming school year. We are here to help
make the transition as smooth as possible.
